Opulence & Engineering A magnificent and sculptural flush-to-ceiling fixture sourced from the historic archives of W. Sitch & Co, Soho. Based on the exceptional quality of the glass cutting and the heavy casting, this piece is likely the work of F & C Osler, the world-famous Birmingham glassmakers.
The focal point is the impressive satin crystal bowl, formed in a distinct flattened "mushroom" profile. The glass features a rich satin finish, dramatically cut with deep vertical "slice" cuts that create a beautiful scalloped edge. The apex is finished with a sharp starburst cut, allowing the bulb's filament to sparkle through the soft diffusion of the frost.
The glass sits upon a heavy cast brass base of monumental quality. It features a deep-relief Acanthus leaf or feather pattern wrapping around the entire gallery—a classical design motif favoured by Osler. We have preserved the original heavy patina, allowing the brass to retain its darkened, bronzed character which highlights the depth of the casting.
Provenance: The Sitch & Co Collection This piece hails from the inventory of W. Sitch & Co, London’s renowned lighting engineers established in 1776. Based in Soho, Sitch & Co were the go-to specialists for the capital’s most prestigious projects.
While they manufactured their own designs, they also supplied and maintained fixtures from the world’s finest makers—including F & C Osler, GEC, and Faraday & Son. Their client list read like a Who’s Who of British heritage, supplying fixtures to National Trust properties, grand country manors, government offices, and West End theatres.
To own a piece from this collection is to own a fixture that has passed through the hands of England’s most exacting lighting curators.
