Large Neoclassical Bronze Ceiling Light with Holophane Starcut Blondel Stiletto Bowl
Maker: Attributed to G.E.C. / Osler / Faraday
Origin: England
Era: Early–Mid 20th Century
An exceptionally refined neoclassical ceiling light featuring a heavy cast bronze frame paired with a Holophane starcut Blondel stiletto glass bowl.
The fitting demonstrates the high level of craftsmanship associated with early British architectural lighting manufacturers such as G.E.C., Osler and Faraday — companies responsible for supplying lighting to civic buildings, railway stations, theatres and prestigious commercial interiors throughout the early twentieth century.
The quality of casting, the classical decorative motifs and the precision-cut Holophane glass all indicate a fitting designed for architectural environments rather than domestic mass production.
Design & Architectural Character
The cast bronze frame follows a restrained neoclassical language, incorporating fluted detailing, classical proportions and a sculpted central medallion.
The bowl itself is a Holophane Blondel stiletto design, distinguished by its finely cut star pattern which radiates from the centre of the glass. This optical geometry was developed by Holophane engineers to both diffuse and control light, producing an even distribution while maintaining brilliance.
When illuminated, the bowl creates a remarkable refractive effect — the starcut pattern producing thousands of small points of light across the interior surface.
The overall composition results in a fitting that feels both decorative and architectural.
Ideal for:
• Country house interiors
• Period townhouses
• Boutique hotels
• Restaurant interiors
• Heritage restorations
• Hallways and stairwells
• Library or drawing room ceilings
Its semi-flush profile also makes it particularly suitable where ceiling height is limited but a statement fixture is still desired.
