Monumental Holophane Bronze Ring Chandelier with Three Ripplelite Shades
Rare Matching Pair – Holophane Catalogue 1933
Sold as a pair
A remarkable and extremely rare matching pair of monumental Holophane ring chandeliers, each mounting three large Ripplelite prismatic glass shades within a heavy cast bronze ring frame.
These impressive fittings represent the highest level of early twentieth-century Holophane architectural lighting design, combining large scale engineering with the optical precision for which Holophane became internationally renowned.
The central structure consists of a substantial cast bronze circular ring, suspended via three chains which meet at an original three-way hanger and continue to the ceiling via a central chain. The heavy bronze construction gives the chandelier both visual presence and structural integrity, while the aged bronze finish displays deep brown tones with subtle highlights developed through decades of natural ageing.
Mounted evenly around the ring are three original Holophane bronze lamp holders, each supporting a large 12 inch Ripplelite prismatic glass shade. These shades feature Holophane’s distinctive concentric and cross-cut prismatic pattern, designed to distribute light evenly while minimising glare — a technology widely used in civic buildings, banks, railway stations and commercial interiors throughout the early twentieth century.
When illuminated, the Ripplelite shades create a beautifully soft, diffused glow with excellent downward illumination, while the large bronze ring structure provides a striking architectural silhouette.
This exact style of chandelier is illustrated in the Holophane 1933 catalogue within the fittings section, confirming its historical authenticity and period design.
Chandeliers of this scale were typically installed in large halls, commercial buildings or prestigious public interiors, and today they translate exceptionally well into grand residential spaces, double height rooms, restaurants, boutique hotels or statement dining rooms.
Finding a single original Holophane ring chandelier of this size is uncommon, however discovering a matching pair is exceptionally rare, making this a unique opportunity for projects requiring symmetry and architectural impact.
