An exceptionally over-engineered explosion proof industrial pendant manufactured by EOW in the former German Democratic Republic.
Heavy cast aluminium construction throughout, originally designed for hazardous industrial environments. Now professionally restored, polished and rewired — retaining its industrial scars while presenting with a refined contemporary architectural finish.
Historical Context
This fitting was produced in the German Democratic Republic (GDR), commonly known as East Germany (1949–1990).
During this period, East German industry focused heavily on engineering for state infrastructure — chemical plants, heavy industry, energy production and manufacturing. Products were built for longevity, safety and mechanical robustness rather than aesthetics.
The result is lighting of extraordinary substance and integrity.
EOW (Elektro-Ost Werke) were a state-associated manufacturer producing industrial and explosion-protected lighting for hazardous environments. Their fittings were designed to meet strict industrial safety classifications and were constructed to endure extreme operational conditions.
This is not decorative industrial — it is authentic Cold War era engineered lighting.

The scale of the upper junction box alone reflects the original specification — it would have housed drive gear and electrical components for hazardous-area compliance.
