Holophane Reflector-Refractor Two-Part Prismatic Glass Pendant Lights
Original Aged Brass Galleries
Maker: Holophane Ltd
Origin: England
Era: Circa 1930s
A classic example of early Holophane optical engineering, these medium-sized two-part prismatic glass pendant lights feature the company’s well-known Reflector-Refractor construction, complete with original aged brass galleries.
Developed following Holophane’s commission to illuminate St Paul’s Cathedral in 1923, the Reflector-Refractor system was engineered to deliver high levels of brightness while carefully controlling glare. This resulted in one of the most effective enclosed lighting systems of the early twentieth century.
As illustrated in Holophane catalogue references from the 1930s, these fully enclosed fittings were widely specified for public and commercial interiors requiring consistent, high-quality illumination.
Historical Context
Holophane was widely recognised as the leading manufacturer of prismatic glass lighting systems throughout the early twentieth century.
The Reflector-Refractor design represents a key development in enclosed lighting technology, combining both reflecting and refracting prisms within a sealed glass unit.
These fittings were commonly specified for:
• Public buildings
• Schools
• Offices
• Shops and retail interiors
• Institutional and commercial environments
The fully enclosed nature of the design made them particularly suitable for spaces requiring controlled, efficient, and evenly distributed lighting.
Design & Architectural Character
The fitting comprises a two-part prismatic glass bowl.
The upper section features vertical and radial prisms designed to reflect and direct light downward, while the lower section incorporates a finer prismatic structure to diffuse and soften the light output.
Externally, the ribbed upper dome contrasts with the more intricate prismatic lower section, creating a balanced and refined industrial aesthetic.
The original cast brass gallery, now naturally aged with areas of verdigris and wear, provides a rich contrast against the crisp geometry of the glass.
These pendants work particularly well within:
• Kitchen island lighting
• Hallways and circulation spaces
• Restaurants and hospitality interiors
• Boutique retail environments
• Industrial and loft-style interiors
• Heritage and period restoration projects
