Extra Large Jefferson “Moonstone” Glass Doricilite Pendant

By G.E.C. (General Electric Company)
England, Circa 1927

A rare and highly sought-after extra large two-part Jefferson Moonstone glass pendant with aged cast bronze fittings by G.E.C.

This is a substantial architectural example of early 20th century British commercial lighting — featuring a dominant 16-inch upper shade and 10-inch lower bowl, forming the classic two-tier Doricilite silhouette in luminous Moonstone glass.

The scale and glass quality elevate this well beyond the standard Doricilite models typically encountered.

Historical Context

G.E.C. (General Electric Company) were one of Britain’s most important early electrical manufacturers, supplying lighting to civic, institutional and commercial interiors throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

A 1927 G.E.C. catalogue illustrates a closely related “DORICILITE” unit — slightly smaller but of identical form — specified with Jefferson glass.

Jefferson’s Moonstone glass was prized for its softly opalescent quality. When illuminated, it produces a gentle, diffused glow with subtle internal depth — far richer and more atmospheric than standard opal glass.

These fittings were commonly specified for:

• Banks
• Public buildings
• Railway administrative offices
• Institutional interiors
• High-end commercial premises

They combine classical architectural proportion with early electric lighting innovation.

Design & Construction

Two-part Jefferson Moonstone glass construction
Extra large 16" (400mm) upper shade
10" (250mm) lower bowl shade
Doric ribbed pattern glass
Characteristic Moonstone opalescent tone
Aged cast bronze gallery and fittings
Original suspension hook and chain assembly
Tiered vented upper cap with classical detailing

The glass remains unstamped, which is not uncommon for Jefferson production of this period, but the form, tone and ribbed Doric pattern align directly with documented G.E.C. Doricilite catalogue examples.

The aged bronze fittings have developed a deep, authentic patina consistent with early 20th century cast metalwork.
