Rare Holophane Two-Part Reflector-Refractor Lilac Prismatic Glass Pendant Light
Original Antique Bronzed Cast Gallery
Maker: Holophane Ltd
Origin: England
Era: Circa 1930s
A particularly rare example of early Holophane optical lighting, this two-part prismatic glass pendant features the company’s Reflector-Refractor construction, complete with its original antique bronzed cast gallery.
What sets this fitting apart is the subtle lilac tone to the glass, a highly unusual variation within Holophane production. This soft tint introduces a warmer, more decorative quality to the light, particularly when illuminated, distinguishing it from the more commonly encountered clear or neutral prismatic examples.
Developed following Holophane’s commission to illuminate St Paul’s Cathedral in 1923, the Reflector-Refractor system was engineered to deliver high levels of brightness while carefully controlling glare, resulting in one of the most effective enclosed lighting systems of the early twentieth century.
As illustrated in Holophane catalogue references from the 1930s, these fully enclosed fittings were widely specified for public and commercial interiors requiring consistent, high-quality illumination.
Historical Context
Holophane was widely recognised as the leading manufacturer of prismatic glass lighting systems throughout the early twentieth century.
The Reflector-Refractor design represents a key development in enclosed lighting technology, combining both reflecting and refracting prisms within a sealed glass unit.
These fittings were commonly specified for:
• Public buildings
• Schools
• Offices
• Shops and retail interiors
• Institutional and commercial environments
The enclosed construction allowed for efficient, controlled light distribution while protecting the lamp within.
Design & Architectural Character
The fitting comprises a two-part prismatic glass bowl.
The upper section features vertical prisms designed to reflect and direct light downward, while the lower section incorporates a finer prismatic structure to diffuse and soften the light output.
The lilac tint gives the glass a distinctive softness and depth, creating a more atmospheric light quality compared to standard clear Holophane examples.
The original cast gallery retains its antique bronzed finish, with a rich, naturally aged surface that complements the warmth of the glass.
This piece works particularly well within:
• Kitchen island lighting
• Hallways and entrance spaces
• Boutique retail interiors
• Restaurants and hospitality settings
• Period and heritage interiors
• Feature lighting within smaller schemes
