Reclaimed Flameproof Mining Lights by Victor

Cross-Arm Junction Variant – West Cannock Colliery

A rare and exceptionally heavy-duty flameproof lighting assembly by Victor Products Ltd, reclaimed from the former West Cannock Colliery coal mine site.

Unlike the more compact pendant examples, this variant features a substantial horizontal cross-arm junction body with dual cable entries and a central bolted flameproof chamber. The engineering is overt and uncompromising — thick cast aluminium sections, large securing bolts, compression cable glands and reinforced ribbed supports.

These were built for underground mining environments where methane gas and coal dust created a constant explosion risk. Every element of the construction is designed to contain and isolate any internal spark. The multi-bolt central chamber and gasketed joints are typical of certified FLP (Flameproof) equipment of the period.

The prismatic glass dome diffuser is deeply ribbed, distributing light while remaining fully enclosed and protected within the cast collar. The glass shows the subtle ageing and mineral staining consistent with long service in subterranean industrial conditions.

The overall silhouette is architectural and mechanical — part lighting, part infrastructure. When suspended, the extended cross-arm and heavy gland entries give these fittings a strong horizontal presence rarely seen in standard industrial pendants.

Industrial Provenance

Victor Products Ltd, established in the 1920s, became a leading British manufacturer of flameproof lighting and specialist electrical equipment for mines, chemical works and military installations.

West Cannock Colliery operated in Staffordshire as part of Britain’s coal mining industry, where explosion-proof lighting was essential for worker safety. These fittings would have formed part of a larger fixed system running through underground galleries.

They are authentic mining-grade artefacts — not styled reproductions.
