Extra Large Flameproof Industrial Pendant Lights by Walsall Conduits Ltd
A superb example of mid-twentieth century British industrial engineering, these extra large flameproof (FLP) pendant lights were manufactured by Walsall Conduits Ltd, a company widely known for producing heavy-duty electrical fittings for demanding industrial environments.
Constructed from substantial cast iron, the fittings were designed for installation in hazardous locations where explosive gases or volatile industrial conditions required protected electrical equipment. The FLP designation (Flameproof) indicates that the housing was engineered to contain any internal ignition, preventing sparks or flame from escaping and igniting the surrounding atmosphere.
The upper body of the light features a heavily ribbed cast iron enclosure, finished in its original industrial blue paint, while the lower section is fitted with a thick domed glass lens secured within a robust clamping ring. This heavy glass dome protects the internal lamp while allowing light to disperse evenly beneath the fitting.
These lights demonstrate the uncompromising construction typical of safety-rated industrial equipment from the period. With their massive cast construction, bolt-down glass retainers, and sealed housing, they were built to withstand harsh factory, refinery, or maritime environments.
