Huge Flameproof Cast Aluminium Floodlights by G.E.C – Deep Skirt Version

A rare variation of the large G.E.C flameproof floodlight series, this example features the deeper skirt housingversion of the same industrial lighting range previously listed. These fittings were engineered by G.E.C (General Electric Company) for use in hazardous industrial environments including oil refineries, chemical plants, tank farms and heavy manufacturing facilities where certified explosion-proof equipment was required.

The body is constructed from heavy cast aluminium, designed to contain internal ignition and prevent sparks escaping into volatile atmospheres. The front of the fitting is secured by a thick armoured glass lens held in place by a heavy compression ring and multiple bolted retainers, ensuring a sealed and extremely durable construction.

Cast into the rim of the housing are the original safety markings:

“Flameproof Floodlight – Cat. No. F65040 – 750/1000 Watt – Cert. No. FLP1283 – Group III.”

These markings correspond with the documented G.E.C industrial lighting catalogue specifications, confirming the fitting as part of their heavy-duty FLP certified lighting range designed for high-risk environments.

This deeper skirt model was designed to house higher output lamps, allowing for powerful directional illumination. The floodlight originally utilised an E40 (GES) porcelain lampholder, supporting lamps up to 750W or 1000W, producing an extremely powerful beam suitable for large industrial sites.

The fittings retain their original industrial painted finish, now heavily worn and weathered from decades of service, giving them exceptional authentic character. When restored, the cast aluminium bodies can also be stripped and finished in a satin aluminium polish, which works beautifully with the strong industrial geometry of these fixtures.

The floodlight is suspended from its original heavy steel cradle bracket, allowing full adjustment of the beam direction.

With a large diameter glass lens and imposing industrial proportions, these fittings make exceptional architectural statement pieces in industrial loft interiors, commercial spaces, restaurants, galleries or large residential environments.

Four examples are currently available.
