Holophane Reflector-Refractor Prismatic Glass Pendant Light
Model 2110 – Small Size
Maker: Holophane Ltd
Origin: England
Era: Circa 1930s
A beautifully engineered early Holophane reflector-refractor pendant light, featuring the iconic two-part prismatic glass construction that made Holophane one of the most respected lighting manufacturers of the twentieth century.
We currently have the very rare opportunity to offer a matching run of twelve fittings, making this an exceptional specification opportunity for larger residential, hospitality or commercial projects where design continuity is essential.
Both sections of prismatic glass are clearly stamped “Holophane – Made in England”, and the original brass gallery also carries the Holophane maker’s mark.
Historical Context
Holophane developed the Reflector-Refractor system to maximise light efficiency while reducing glare.
The design combines:
• A top prismatic reflector directing light downward
• A lower refracting diffuser distributing light evenly
This optical system allowed Holophane fittings to produce significantly more usable light compared with traditional shades.
The attached 1936 Holophane catalogue page illustrates the exact model family, confirming this fitting as part of the Reflector-Refractor series, produced in four sizes ranging from 7½ inches to 14 inches diameter.
These fittings were widely installed in:
• Schools
• Public buildings
• Offices
• Retail interiors
• Workshops
Their distinctive prismatic glass construction has since become one of the most recognisable designs in industrial lighting history.
Design & Architectural Character
The reflector-refractor form is one of the most elegant examples of early twentieth-century functional lighting design.
Two precisely moulded prismatic glass sections are secured together with three original brass retaining clips, allowing the lower diffuser to be removed for lamp access.
The result is a visually balanced form where the ribbed upper reflector and faceted lower diffuser create a remarkable play of light when illuminated.
Today these fittings translate beautifully into contemporary interiors.
Particularly suitable for:
• Kitchen island lighting
• Bars and restaurants
• Boutique retail spaces
• Industrial loft apartments
• Studio and workspace environments
• Heritage restoration projects
The availability of twelve matching fittings presents an exceptional opportunity for designers specifying lighting across an entire scheme.
