Extra Large Moonstone Glass Plafonnier

Attributed to Osler & Faraday
England, Circa 1925–1935

An exceptional extra large 16-inch decorative Moonstone glass plafonnier bowl with oxidised copper mounts and matching four-way suspension hanger.

A rare and refined architectural example — combining luminous opalescent Moonstone glass with deeply patinated copper fittings of remarkable quality and proportion.

This is not a standard utility bowl. The scale, detailing and quality of the metalwork elevate it into the upper tier of British period decorative lighting.

Historical & Design Context

The copper mounts and four-point suspension hanger are of superb casting and finishing quality, attributed stylistically to Osler & Faraday — both respected names in high-grade British architectural lighting of the early 20th century.

The fittings display:

• Elegant ring handles with sculpted collars
• Heavy cast suspension hub
• Balanced four-chain configuration
• Rich, naturally oxidised copper patina

The Moonstone glass bowl remains unsigned — not uncommon for high-quality period production — yet the glass tone, weight and pressed floral detailing are entirely consistent with premium British manufacture of the interwar period.

Moonstone glass was favoured for its soft internal luminosity. When illuminated, it produces a layered glow with depth and warmth rather than flat white output.

Design & Construction

16-inch (405mm) diameter bowl
Pressed decorative floral and scalloped detailing
Soft opalescent Moonstone tone
Four cast copper ring mounts
Matching four-chain oxidised copper suspension
Large decorative ceiling hanger

The glass features:

• Subtle pressed botanical motifs
• Gentle radial detailing to the base
• Softly diffused exterior surface

When lit, the interior glows warmly while the copper framework frames the form with tonal contrast.

The four-way suspension creates architectural balance, allowing the bowl to sit perfectly level and visually centred within a room.
