Monumental Jefferson Moonstone Art Nouveau Plafonnier
Jefferson Glass Co.
England, Circa 1910–1925
An exceptional and rarely encountered 20-inch Jefferson Moonstone plafonnier of true architectural scale, executed in the Art Nouveau manner with refined floral ornament and quality cast brass suspension.
This large-format bowl has a commanding yet elegant presence — wide and shallow in profile, terminating in a sculpted, ridged finial point to the centre. The proportions are particularly well judged; the diameter creates visual breadth while the restrained depth maintains sophistication rather than heaviness.
Glass
Pressed Jefferson Moonstone glass
Soft opalescent white tone
Gloss finish
Floral Art Nouveau border detailing
Central radiating floral finial motif
The bowl carries a delicate raised botanical border flowing around the upper perimeter — a subtle garland rather than a heavy decorative band. The underside culminates in a crisp, radiating floral medallion that resolves into a ribbed finial point.
Moonstone glass of this period produces a beautifully diffused, even illumination. When lit, the decoration becomes gently animated, the relief catching light without harsh shadowing — ideal for entrance halls, stairwells or formal reception rooms where atmosphere matters as much as brightness.

Design Context
This is a true country house scale plafonnier — suited to tall ceilings, broad stair landings or substantial period interiors. Its diameter allows it to sit confidently within larger architectural spaces without appearing diminutive.
It would sit particularly well within:
• Edwardian or Arts & Crafts interiors
• Art Nouveau schemes
• Period townhouse hallways
• Boutique hospitality projects seeking authentic early 20th-century detail
Large Jefferson bowls of this size are increasingly difficult to source, especially retaining their original decorative brass suspension.
