Huge Flameproof Cast Aluminium Floodlights by G.E.C
A striking and extremely substantial example of mid-twentieth century British industrial lighting, these large flameproof floodlights were manufactured by G.E.C (General Electric Company) for use in hazardous industrial environments where reliability and safety were paramount.
Originally designed for installation in oil refineries, tank farms and industrial facilities, this model formed part of G.E.C’s specialised Flameproof (FLP) lighting range, engineered to safely contain internal ignition and prevent sparks or flame from escaping into potentially explosive atmospheres.
The bodies are constructed from heavy cast aluminium with a large domed front housing protected by a thick glass lens secured with a bolted compression ring. The robust clamping assembly and multiple stainless fixings reflect the uncompromising engineering standards required for industrial safety equipment of this type.
The fittings retain their original factory stove-enamelled finish, now beautifully aged with natural wear and patination from decades of use. This authentic industrial surface adds tremendous character and clearly reveals the original cast G.E.C markings within the body.
According to original catalogue documentation, this model was designed to accommodate E40 (GES) porcelain lampholders and lamps up to 500W tungsten or 250W MBFT, producing powerful focused beams suitable for industrial floodlighting.
The adjustable mounting cradle allows the light to be fully articulated through a wide vertical range, enabling precise directional control of the beam.
At nearly half a metre in diameter and weighing approximately 17 kilograms, these are exceptionally large architectural fixtures. They make a dramatic statement in industrial loft interiors, hospitality venues, gallery spaces or commercial design projects, particularly when restored and refinished.
These lights also offer an excellent restoration opportunity. The cast aluminium bodies can be professionally stripped and polished to achieve a beautiful satin aluminium finish, a treatment that works particularly well with G.E.C castings of this era.
Currently photographed in original unrestored condition, the lights retain their authentic industrial patina.
