Holophane “Widerlite” Prismatic Bulkhead Light
Former MOD Facility, Scotland
1933 Catalogue Model | Large Format
An original Holophane “Widerlite” prismatic bulkhead of substantial scale and presence, reclaimed from a Ministry of Defence facility in Scotland.
This is the larger format example illustrated in the 1933 Holophane catalogue — a period where industrial lighting combined engineered precision with emerging Art Deco geometry.
Heavy cast aluminium construction paired with Holophane’s trademark prismatic glass diffuser creates a fitting that is both architecturally disciplined and visually powerful.
These are not reproduction industrial lights — they are authentic pre-war engineered luminaires built for institutional longevity.
Historical Context
Holophane were pioneers in prismatic glass technology, developing optical control systems that maximised light output while reducing glare.
The “Widerlite” series was designed as a bulkhead unit providing controlled light distribution around the lamp, ensuring maximum utilisation of output — a significant technical advancement for the period.
Originally specified for institutional, industrial and governmental environments, these fittings were engineered for durability, serviceability and long operational life.
The chamfered housing and stepped prismatic diffuser reflect the restrained geometry associated with early 20th century industrial Art Deco design.
Construction
Heavy cast aluminium body
