Edwardian Octagonal Leaded Glass Pendant with Nickel Plated Brass Frame and Cast Acanthus Mounts

IG[stock no. needed]

A striking and unusual Edwardian pendant of strong geometric character, combining an octagonal leaded glass body with a nickel-plated brass frame of considerable quality and decorative detail. An uncommon form — the angular panelled construction sits apart from the bowl and ring plafonnier types of the period and demonstrates a different strand of high-quality British lighting production from the early twentieth century.

The Glass

The body is constructed from eight individual frosted textured glass panels, each set within mitre-jointed brass glazing bars and arranged to form a faceted octagonal form. The upper tier of panels is broader and hexagonal in profile, separated from the lower conical tier by a horizontal brass band — the two tiers together creating a pronounced diamond or lantern silhouette when viewed from the side. The glass itself carries a fine all-over hammered or pebble texture, visible in the lit detail shot where the surface breaks the transmitted light into a warm irregular glow across each panel. When illuminated the effect is particularly strong — the panelled construction divides the light into eight distinct glowing faces, the brass glazing bars reading as dark lines against the luminous glass. Viewed from directly below, the octagonal base plate centred with a cast floral rosette creates a satisfying geometric composition.

The Frame

The brass framework is nickel plated throughout, carrying a naturally aged silver-grey patina. The horizontal band separating the two panel tiers is applied with individually cast acanthus scroll mounts — one centred to each panel face, each crisply detailed with palmette and scrolling foliage forms. The upper tier corners carry small cast bracket details. The fitting suspends from a plain disc ceiling plate via four hand-twisted rod suspension arms — wrought, not cast — each formed with a characteristic spiral twist along their length, a detail associated with quality hand-finished metalwork of the period. These connect via rings to round-link chains rising to the ceiling plate. The combination of twisted rod arms alongside the cast decorative mounts gives this fitting a particularly individual character.
