F. & C. Osler Cut Crystal Pendant Lights in Gilt Brass Frames, Rare Set of Five
Sold as a set of five
A run of five cut crystal pendant lights by F. & C. Osler of Birmingham, each bowl held within a gilt brass frame. All original and untouched, and extremely rare to find as a complete matching set of five. Offered as a set or priced individually.
The bowls are the heart of the fitting. Each is hand-cut lead crystal of acorn form, worked all over in a dense field of sharp-cut diamonds — deeply and crisply incised, graded cleanly to the curve of the body and gloss-polished throughout. This is Osler crystal: bright, heavy, with the depth and precision of cutting that set the firm apart from ordinary production glass. Lit, the diamond field comes alive, every facet taking the source and throwing it back so the bowl reads as a body of controlled brilliance rather than a simple shade.
Each bowl sits within a pierced gilt brass frame of matching quality. An openwork band of intersecting arches is punctuated at regular intervals by applied square panels, each cast in fine relief with a crisp eight-petal rosette, framed top and bottom by rope-twist borders. The frame suspends on three beaded brass chains rising to a fluted ceiling cap and turned knop, with a cast petal collar and ball finial finishing the base. The brass retains its original gilding throughout, carrying the soft, even patina that comes only with age — ready to specify as-found, or for sympathetic restoration if a scheme calls for it.
Founded in Birmingham in 1807, F. & C. Osler became the pre-eminent name in cut crystal lighting of the nineteenth century, celebrated for the crystal fountain at the Great Exhibition of 1851 and for supplying lighting to royal and noble clients across Britain, India and the Middle East. The firm's command of high-quality lead crystal and precision hand-cutting remains the benchmark against which period cut-glass lighting is judged.
