F. & C. Osler Satin Cut Crystal Plafonnier with Cast Brass Swan Hook Gallery

IG221834

A refined and elegant plafonnier by F. & C. Osler, combining exceptional hand-cut crystal with a beautifully detailed cast brass gallery. A piece that demonstrates precisely why Osler's output sits apart — the quality of both the glass and the metalwork is immediately apparent. Acquired from the archive of W. Sitch & Co., London.

The Glass

The bowl is executed in hand-cut satin crystal carrying two distinct decorative treatments. Around the upper section runs a bold overlapping petal relief — deeply cut, rounded lobes sitting in close formation, glowing with particular warmth when illuminated as light pushes through the satin crystal between each form. Below, the interior face of the bowl is worked with a fine radiating reed pattern, the lines running from centre to rim and visible in full when viewed from beneath — producing a subtle starburst effect at the bulb point that spreads across the entire surface of the glass. The combination of two complementary cut patterns within a single bowl is a mark of the care and ambition applied to Osler's finest work. Fully satin finished throughout, the bowl produces an exceptionally even and warm diffused glow when lit.

The Frame

The bowl sits within a plain polished brass rim ring of clean and precise profile — deliberately understated, allowing the glass to dominate. The ring is fitted with three individually cast brass swan-neck hooks, each formed as a graceful curved hook terminating in a crisp scrolled tip, through which the suspension chains pass directly. It is a simple and elegant solution, beautifully executed in solid cast brass. Three polished oval-link brass chains rise to a turned brass ball canopy connector, the whole suspension system retaining a bright polished finish with natural age.

Provenance

This piece forms part of a significant acquisition of approximately 200 pieces drawn directly from the W. Sitch & Co. archive, London. Founded in 1776 and trading from Soho for over two centuries, W. Sitch & Co. were suppliers of antique and period lighting to country house, heritage and film and television clients across Britain. Further pieces from the same acquisition will be listed as they are prepared.
