A rare and completely original five arm Art Deco chandelier by Établissements Jean Gauthier (EZAN), retaining its original oxidised copper finish and signed opalescent glass shades.
This is a substantial and architecturally balanced French chandelier, combining sculptural copper arms with tiered opalescent glass bowls — each shade softly ribbed and moulded with stylised leaf motifs characteristic of mid-century French decorative lighting.
The result is refined, elegant and unmistakably period correct.
Historical Context
Établissements Jean Gauthier (EZAN) were one of France’s most respected 20th century art glass manufacturers, active throughout the interwar and post-war periods.
EZAN specialised in moulded and acid-treated art glass, producing opalescent and frosted shades that were widely specified in French domestic and hospitality interiors.
By the 1950s, their work reflected a softened continuation of the Art Deco aesthetic — retaining stylised botanical motifs and sculptural geometry while moving toward cleaner, more architectural forms.
