Matching Pair of Large Satin Cut Crystal Bowl Plafonniers in Aged Brass Frames
Priced as a Pair
A matching pair of large satin cut crystal plafonniers, each shallow bowl held in an aged brass frame and suspended on triple chains. Acquired as part of a significant collection of approximately 200 pieces drawn directly from the stock of W. Sitch & Co., one of the most respected antique lighting dealers in British history. Sold as a pair, and increasingly hard to find as a true matched pair at this scale.
The bowls are the piece. Each is heavy cut crystal worked in a deep diamond lattice, the cut facets gloss-polished to full brilliance and set against a satin-frosted ground — the gleaming lattice reading sharply against the soft matte field, with a cut starburst radiating from the centre of each base. It is a combination that does two things at once: the satin ground diffuses the lamp to an even, glare-free wash, while the polished diamond cuts catch and throw the light in points of brightness. Lit, the effect is exactly as intended — a warm, controlled glow across the whole bowl with the cut field picked out in fire. This satin-and-gloss treatment is the mark of the finest period decorative crystal, and the precision of the cutting across both bowls is first-class.
Each bowl is rimmed in aged brass and hung from three chains to a matching ceiling rose. The brass carries its original aged surface throughout — warm, even, and untouched — and the two fittings are a genuine pair, consistent bowl to bowl and frame to frame. Ready to specify as-found, or available for sympathetic restoration if a scheme calls for it.
W. Sitch & Co. were founded in 1776 and traded from their Soho premises until relatively recently, supplying antique and period lighting to the country house, heritage and film and television industries for over two centuries. This piece forms part of a significant acquisition of approximately 200 pieces drawn directly from the Sitch archive — one of the most substantial collections of curated antique lighting to come to market in recent years. Further pieces from the same acquisition will be listed as they are prepared and photographed.
