Monumental Wrought Iron Church Chandelier Ring with Four Holophane Ripple-Lite Prismatic Glass Shades
IG221828
A pair of monumental church chandelier rings of exceptional presence and quality, each combining a double-hoop wrought iron ring with four Holophane Ripple-Lite prismatic glass shades in their original stamped brass galleries. Pieces of this scale, provenance and completeness are genuinely rare — the combination of the iron ring, the aged brass hardware and the Holophane glass making each chandelier a self-contained statement of early twentieth century institutional lighting at its finest. Two available, sold individually or as a pair.
The Ring
Each ring is constructed from double-hoop wrought iron flat bar — two parallel hoops of substantial section, spaced apart and riveted at intervals, creating a rigid and visually powerful structural ring. The iron has been sand-blasted and treated with iron paste, producing a deep charcoal grey finish that reads as raw malleable iron — a surface of real character and material honesty. The four shade assemblies suspend from the inner hoop on individual chains, evenly spaced at the cardinal points. The outer hoop provides structural depth and visual weight, the double-ring profile giving the chandelier a strong architectural silhouette from below. Should a different finish be preferred, the iron can be exposed or treated to specification — please enquire.
The Shades
Each chandelier carries four Holophane Ripple-Lite prismatic glass shades — the definitive Holophane two-piece shade format, comprising an upper bowl and lower skirt clamped together at the equator by a stamped brass gallery bearing the Holophane maker's mark. The prismatic cross-hatch surface is immediately identifiable — the moulded refraction pattern that made Holophane the standard specification for churches, civic halls, hospitals and railway stations throughout the first half of the twentieth century. When illuminated the shades produce Holophane's characteristic controlled distribution — a broad, even wash of light directed downward and outward with the efficiency the refracted glass delivers. The lit shots convey the quality of the effect clearly. All four shades on each chandelier are present and intact.
The Suspension
Each ring suspends from four solid brass chains linking to a cast brass four-way ball hanger at the apex. The brasswork throughout carries a deep aged patina developed over decades — the surface darkened and rich, with warm brass showing through at the wear points. The brass can be stripped and polished if a brighter finish is preferred. Please enquire at point of order.
Provenance
These chandeliers were originally installed in a church interior — a typical application for Holophane Ripple-Lite shades of this period, which were widely specified for ecclesiastical, civic and institutional spaces where high ceilings and broad coverage were required.
