A substantial and technically significant example of mid-century British flameproof industrial lighting, manufactured by Heyes & Company of Wigan circa 1950.
Originally installed within a Scottish chemical mixing plant, these fittings were engineered for hazardous environments where the presence of volatile gases demanded fully enclosed, spark-proof illumination. The original specification plate remains intact, clearly marked:

The heavy cast iron body, multi-bolt flameproof assembly and thick prismatic glass enclosure were designed to contain internal ignition and prevent external atmospheric ignition — a level of industrial over-engineering rarely seen in modern fittings.
This is not decorative industrial styling — it is authentic hazardous-area engineering.
Finish
The original cast body has been professionally treated using our controlled oxidisation process.
A reactive solution is applied to the existing metal surface, encouraging natural oxidation before being sealed to stabilise and protect the finish.
The result is a deep, warm rusted patina that softens the otherwise imposing industrial mass — making the fitting highly suitable for high-end residential and hospitality interiors where authenticity is required without harshness.
Also available in a highly polished finish upon request.
